The Portrait Experience

What This Is

This isn’t about posing, performing, or becoming someone you’re not.

The experience at Chapter One Studio is designed to feel calm, unpressured, and human. A space where you can slow down, breathe, and simply be yourself… Without needing to know what to do in front of a camera.

Whether you’re booking portraits for yourself, a family member, or a specific moment in your life, the focus is always the same: how it feels.

Who This Is For

This experience is for you if:

  • You feel awkward or self-conscious in front of a camera

  • You’ve never liked photos of yourself

  • You don’t want stiff poses or forced smiles

  • You want portraits that feel real, not overly polished

You don’t need confidence. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to practise.

You just need to show up.

The Consultation

Before anything is booked, we begin with a consultation.

This takes place at Chapter One Studio and is simply a chance for us to talk.
About you, about why you’re considering having portraits made, and about what you want this experience to feel like.

There’s no pressure and no expectation to decide anything immediately. The consultation exists to make sure this feels like the right fit.

The right fit for you and for me. It also allows me to understand what matters most to you, so the session itself can be shaped with intention.

Many people tell me they already feel more at ease after this conversation alone.

If it feels supportive, we can also talk about the option of working with a trusted hair and makeup stylist. This is never a requirement, just an option for those who’d like a little extra care on the day. Some people find it helps them relax into the experience; others prefer to keep things simple. There’s no right choice, only what feels right for you.

Before Your Session

Once your session is booked, everything is designed to help you arrive feeling relaxed.

You’ll receive simple, thoughtful guidance around what to wear and how to prepare. Nothing overwhelming or prescriptive. The aim isn’t perfection, but comfort.

On the day, you’ll be welcomed into Chapter One Studio, a calm, private space where we’ll take a moment to settle in before photographing anything. There’s no rush to start and no pressure to perform.

You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do. That part is never your responsibility.

During the Session

The session itself is slow, relaxed, and gently guided.

There’s no pressure to perform and no expectation to act a certain way. I’ll guide you where needed, but I’m always paying attention to what feels natural rather than what looks impressive.

We’ll take breaks if needed. We’ll talk. We’ll move slowly.

Most people arrive saying they hate having their photo taken.
Most people leave surprised by how comfortable it felt.

My Approach

I work quietly and intentionally.

I focus on presence over perfection, connection over control, and honesty over polish. I’m less interested in trends and more interested in capturing something that feels true.

Good portraits aren’t made by forcing moments, they’re made by creating space for them.

A Note on Comfort

It’s completely okay to feel unsure, nervous, or a little awkward…Most people do.

There’s no expectation to know what to do or how to be. We can move slowly, take breaks, talk things through, or sit quietly when that feels easier. If something doesn’t feel comfortable, we adjust.

This experience is designed to be flexible, unhurried, and responsive. It’s shaped around you, not the other way around.

After the Session

After your session, you’ll be invited back to the studio for a reveal appointment.

This is where you’ll see your portraits for the first time. Your images will be carefully edited and curated into a small, intentional collection, so you’re not faced with endless choices or repetition.

During this appointment, I’ll guide you through the images and help you decide how you’d like to enjoy them going forward. Whether that’s wall art, an album, or printed photographs for your home.

There’s no pressure to decide anything on the spot. This part of the process is simply about taking time, reflecting on what you see, and choosing what feels right for you.

A Final Thought

This experience isn’t about looking a certain way.

It’s about feeling seen.

Take the Next Step

If this approach resonates, you’re warmly invited to take the next step.
